Q. In the late 1950’s a group of us formed a youth club assisted by a Major Oldendorf, who lived in Willow Grove. I think the major was involved since he had seen us all gather in ‘the rec’ and his motive was to facilitate a place where we could meet regularly. A sort of “lets get the kids off the streets” long before it was the right thing to do.
I thought we met in the St Mary’s Hall (where Sainsburys is today) but then I recall that the youth club there was a church youth club. Could there have been another hall in the high street – possibly a Red Cross hall. Maybe we met there. Perhaps Major Oldendorf was a committee member of Red Cross and was able to arrange the use of the hall? Can anybody remember?
